Safety is a significant concern for industrial employees. You want to provide your employees with the best safety training possible for their health and to protect your business. It is vital to ensure compliance. If you lack safety experience, knowing when your employees need to be retrained or receive refresher safety training might be challenging. Here are some fundamental guidelines to point you in the right direction.

Required Schedules

Some safety topics are on a regulation-mandated schedule. These topics require retraining on a particular schedule. Examples include: For HAZWOPER certification, OSHA requires an initial 24 or 40-hour training course with an 8-hour refresher course yearly. First Aid requires an entire retraining course every three years to maintain certification. CPR/AED certification expires after two years without retraining. Most training is valid for a specified amount of time. For all of the training in your organization, it is essential to be familiar with the mandated training schedules.

After a Safety Survey or Inspection/Audit

When you send out safety surveys or conduct routine walkthroughs, you get a ton of information about how well the safe practices within your company are working. If your surveys indicate that employees do not feel as though they have adequate training, use the information to assign more training on topics that are relevant to the situation. If you or a team member notice unsafe practices or behavior, address and rectify the problem with training on the subject.

Following an Accident

If an accident does occur as they often do, the accident is pointing out a hole in your safety program. It is rare for unsafe practices to stem from the recklessness of an individual. Nobody wants to get injured. Accidents typically happen as a result of a lack of knowledge and understanding. It is due to a failure in the system. If an accident occurs, take the opportunity to reinforce the essential nature of safety to individuals, others, and the company. Do not forget to retrain employees on the safety issue at hand.

Annual Training

Your people are the heart and soul of your organization, and their safety is a priority. When taking care of your people, be safe instead of sorry. For crucial safety training, try to retrain your employees every year. A company-wide annual training schedule can ensure that employees receive training on the most up-to-date regulations and requirements. It also helps to normalize training and make it a part of your company culture. Consider using a learning management system to keep training on track. The system can schedule training for you to help keep the training schedule organized. Set your training schedule and forget it. The system will remind you of upcoming safety training.
